It’s Time To Manage! Tip of the Week by Stephen Davies January 31, 2011

Categories: Time Management Tips

Never Delegate Upwards

When somebody comes to you with an issue they should figure out themselves, don’t allow yourself to relieve them of the burden and take it on yourself. Instead of saying “leave it with me” when this happens, say “never delegate upwards” and ask them for their solution.

At The Gym I Saw Polar… January 30, 2011

Categories: My Life

After my abs class the other day, I saw that the Lynbrook Running Shop had a booth at New York Sports Club in Long Beach. I went over to see what they were selling.  I met the owner, Ellen, when I was with my friend, Marti, buying a new pair of Brooks at her store over the summer. Ellen put Marti and I on her mailing list and since then, we’ve been receiving emails about upcoming runs and such.

One of my colleagues started a Facebook group on Long Island running, which I joined. She posted a blog that was written by Ellen about winter running.  I read the article and was impressed. It was well-written and well-thought out.

So, when I saw Ellen, I mentioned that I read her blog.  I shared that I have a blog with 22,000 unique visitors. Suddenly, this man came out of nowhere.

“You have 22,000 people following you on your blog?” he asked.

“Yeah, and I also have about 2500 on Facebook and more than 5,000 on Twitter and so on…” I said.

“What’s your blog about?” he asked.

I told him that it’s an eclectic mix of day to day living, running, fitness, working in a small business, raising children and more.  I told him that we also write about social media topics, leadership topics and other business related topics. But we mix them up so that it stays lively.

“You must call Gina,” he said. “She may want you to review a product or help you promote your site with a giveaway.”

I called her. She didn’t return the call. I called again. And again, she didn’t return the call. Then I wrote her an email.  A couple of days later, I got an email back from her saying that she forwarded my information to her PR firm.  The PR firm wrote the next email. Obviously, they wanted to see samples of my blog posts but the PR person wrote, “and I see you are a PR person too.”

Hmmm. I wonder why she mentioned that? I explained that blogging was a hobby of mine and would be thrilled to review any Polar products. I also mentioned that I was looking for a sponsor for the Blogher conference in August. Hey, you never know…

Get Your Buckwheat Pillows Here… January 29, 2011

Categories: My Life

Pillows are important.  They make or break your sleep. Since I’ve been having trouble sleeping and staying asleep, I decided to buy a new type of pillow that was recommended in a magazine.  The pillows are made of buckwheat hulls and supposedly shapes your head so that you feel “snuggled” all night long.  They are organic and hyper allergic and got pretty good recommendations.

The other day, I came home from work to see that the pillows arrived.  As I walked up the steps, I noticed they were still on my front porch.  I opened the front door to my house, put down all my work bags and went outside to get the box. It was ridiculously heavy! I could barely lift it.

I finally dragged it in, opened it up and found two pillows weighing 10 pounds each. (This is true because my son couldn’t believe the weight either and ran on the scale with them.)

After plopping them on my bed, I decided to test it out.  Oh my God, it felt like I was sleeping on little pebbles.  I tried to shape them, soften them and even roll around on them and they still didn’t soften up.  They were hard as a rock.

I decided to try to get used to them. Maybe I’ll get a better night sleep. As I placed my hand under the pillow, as I always do, I realized that between the weight of the pillow and the weight of my head, my hand started to go numb.

Do I recommend these pillows?  The verdict is not in yet. I’m going to keep trying them out for another week and then I’ll let you know… Okay?

P.S. I bought the pillows from Beans72.com, in case you want to try them out.

New Zodiac Signs? WHAT? January 28, 2011

Categories: My Thoughts

I know there’s been a lot of hype about the fact that since the earth has changed its alignment, a new zodiac sign has been added to the mix. Instead of 12 signs, we now have 13.

Here are the new dates:

Capricorn: Jan. 20 – Feb. 16
Aquarius: Feb. 16 – March 11
Pisces: March 11- April 18
Aries: April 18 – May 13
Taurus: May 13 – June 21
Gemini: June 21 – July 20
Cancer: July 20 – Aug. 10
Leo: Aug. 10 – Sept. 16
Virgo: Sept. 16 – Oct. 30
Libra: Oct. 30 – Nov. 23
Scorpio: Nov. 23 – Nov. 29
Ophiuchus: Nov. 29 – Dec. 17
Sagittarius: Dec. 17 – Jan. 20

For the last 30 + years, I thought I was a Taurus.  Now, I’m told I’m an Aries.

Does that mean that because of this new alignment my personality has shifted?

Does this mean that everyone’s personalities have shifted and we are more like the new signs than the old ones?  And what about compatibility?

Don’t certain signs go with other signs?

And why is it that Scorpio only has 9 days?

And finally, what is a Ophiuchus?

I know I’m asking a lot of questions here, but what’s next? Do we add another month to our calendar?

Love to hear your thoughts…

A Runner’s Diary: Preparing for the NYC Half Marathon January 27, 2011

Categories: A Runner's Diary

It’s been six long weeks of suffering through shin splints. I still can’t believe how painful it has been. During this time period, I have not even been able to run a block. All I’ve been doing is some weight training, elliptical and spin. But what I’ve really been doing is shopping! Even if I could hardly walk, I trolled the racks at TJ Maxx and Marshalls to find bargains for running attire and actually found some amazing deals, So, I was happy I had the opportunity to use my extra time to spend a little money on running gear.

One item I bought online was The Stick, a device that helps massage your shins and calves. It actually worked pretty well. I was introduced to it in Disney at their expo. The Stick people had a big booth there and one of the sales people let me try it out.

I also purchased Kinesio tape. I’ve seen athletes at the gym wearing the tape and I’ve seen athletes at the Olympics wearing it too. I figured I would try it out. It worked well with my compression sleeves, so I wore both for weeks at a time.

This past weekend, I finally felt better. I don’t know if it was the new products I purchased or the time off, but I couldn’t believe how easy it was to walk up and down the stairs again without feeling pain. I knew that since the NYC Half Marathon was only eight weeks away, I needed to get a schedule together, so I searched on the Internet and found several different programs.

Some of the programs kept to short runs throughout the training, while others encouraged the runner to run long runs. I’m going to try a combination of both in order to be injury-free.

I ran yesterday on the treadmill for the first time since the nine-mile long run in Central Park and it felt good. I ran two miles and definitely felt pain in my leg, but ran through it.

After the run, I iced, stretched and took Naproxen. I also took out The Stick and used it on my leg. I felt a little uncomfortable, but also felt satisfied with myself that I was able to run the two miles after such a long stretch of time not running.

Interestingly, the charity that I am running the NYC Half Marathon for, Team for Kids, which helps combat obesity and offers running programs for inner city children, offered me a coach and various seminars to take prior to the race. Some of the seminars include: core training, wearing the right gear, and preparing for the Half Marathon and more.

I just downloaded the NYC Half Marathon Course Map and am literally scared. The toughest part of the run will be around Central Park. After that, the run goes to 42nd Street and cuts across to the West Side. From there, runners go all the way down to Battery Park. Even though I’m nervous, I know this is going to be amazing. I’m looking forward to the views and the journey.

The only thing is, I have to run faster than 13 minutes a mile. I know I can do it. It’s just a long run. So hopefully with the training, I’ll be able to complete this Half Marathon and put this one under my belt for good.
