40 Year Old Cavity November 30, 2011

Categories: My Life,My Thoughts

Healthy SmileI didn’t get my first cavity until I turned 40.  I went to the dentist once a year to get a cleaning since I was a kid and I never had to go back until the following year.

People would ask me what I was doing to keep such healthy teeth and I really didn’t know.

But since I turned 40, I feel like the cavities are catching up with me.  I just went to the dentist the other day and he found three cavities!  When he started to drill one, he noticed that it went deep into my root and immediately sent me to a doctor who specializes in root canals.

I rush over to him as fast as I could but it still took 30 minutes to get there.  When I entered his office, I was taken immediately.  The dentist was very nice. He explained the procedure every step of the way while my numb mouth felt no pain.

When it was over, I left his office with a root canal, a prescription for pain medication and a goody bag that the receptionist gave me as I was leaving.  “Oh, a present huh?” I asked the receptionists.  She just smiled.

Expecting the usual toothbrush and toothpaste, I opened the bag when I got to my car. In the bag was a pen, a bunch of sticky notes, lip balm and sanitary hand wash.

Hmmm… Okay… Do you find anything strange with that picture?

OPI Lacquer App, a “MUST HAVE”

Categories: Fashion Item of the Week,My Thoughts,Reviews,Social Media

OPI AppThree things that I absolutely love are technology and fashion and FREE. So naturally, when I heard about OPI announcing the re-launch of their OPI Application for the iPhone/iPod Touch, I was extremely excited. I previously downloaded OPI’s App and was excited to see what their new features might be.

The original OPI App was amazing and is a “must have” for those who get their nails done. When you’re choosing your lacquer at the salon, you can “test” the color out and see how it looks on your hand before committing. The amazing thing too, is that you can easily choose a lacquer share to accessorize any new dress, top or jacket right when you’re shopping in a store!

The updated OPI App still offers a really easy, free way to browse and search over 200 OPI nail lacquer shades, but this time it’s faster. The “Try It On Color Studio” still continues to provide a look at all current OPI shades. What I like is that the new search allows users to view past favorites (as I  have some favorite colors that have retired) and a bit of information about the year in which those hues were retired.

The visual display is now enhanced, as the improved OPI App is now at a much higher resolution. One of the nice, new features is that the application now has the capability to wait in the background while other programs are used, namely Facebook. It gives the user the option to check out OPI‘s Facebook page without actually having to leave the OPI App.

The OPI App also includes a search bar with word prompt technology. So, after typing just a few letters, any possible options will be offered. Since its original debut, the App has added a sort-by-collection feature, highlighting current collections and promotions so that users will know what’s new to the brand. The App even lets users select favorites, storing lacquer choices for future reference.

A Runner’s Diary: Trying Out Yoga November 28, 2011

Categories: A Runner's Diary

YogaEvery time I gear up for a half marathon, and I have geared up three times now, something “bad” happens. It’s nothing major, thank goodness, but it always seems to set me back.

This time, I’m getting ready to run the Disney Half Marathon with my friend, Marti DiPaola. But a few weeks ago, I went bike riding in Central Park with my family and since my seat was a little too low and the hills were a little too high, I did something to my meniscus.

Three years ago, my meniscus snapped due to a skiing accident. It took such a long time to heal but once it was healed, I felt great. I had no pain until I went bicycle riding.

I immediately went to the doctor and he told me not to run for a few weeks. He was hopeful that I didn’t need surgery if I didn’t feel symptomatic. So I haven’t exercised, not even one bit. But it’s starting to make me feel crazy.

Recently, I went to my physical therapist who said I could do low impact exercise but no running. “Not yet.”

With my husband, I joined a yoga class at Nassau Community College. We started a few weeks ago. So I felt at least I was doing something.

This week we walked in and took our spots on the floor. Andrea, our instructor, insisted that we take off our shoes and socks. She likes to start the class by asking everyone how they felt after the last class.

“I felt nausea,” one of the older women in the back of the class said.

“Hmmm … I wonder why?” Andrea asked. “Do you have low blood pressure?” The woman shook her head. “High blood pressure?” The woman shook her head again. “You know I really don’t know why you would feel that way.”
I butted in, “Did you eat breakfast before the class?”

“No,” the woman in the back of the room said. (I knew that was the reason because if I exercise or do anything on an empty stomach, I don’t feel well either.)

But Andrea didn’t think that was it. “I think you need to stop leaning over and be careful which postures you do.”

We started the program on the floor and then stood up. Andrea had soothing music playing in the background. Personally, I could barely hear it. But, one of the older women in the front asked Andrea to turn it down. “It is way too loud and I can’t hear a word you are saying!” she told her.

After a series of postures from child’s play to the warrior pose, Andrea told us to sit against the wall. “Now I want you to raise your legs high above your head with your back on the floor.”

We all followed her instructions. Two older men who were next to me were able to get there but once they had their legs in the air, they couldn’t take them down. I started to giggle. (I felt a little bad about it, but it really was funny.)

When Andrea made eye contact with me, I flagged her over to help the men get back to the original position.

After the class was over, Andrea asked my husband and me why we weren’t in the more advanced class. “I know you are runners, so you could definitely do the postures,” she said.

“I’m not a runner any more,” my husband announced to her. “I hurt my back on the last half marathon and that’s it for now.”

“This one is fine with me,” I said. I didn’t tell her that I secretly liked that all the people in the class were great characters, maybe not for a runner’s diary but definitely for a yoga’s diary!

Black Friday Holiday Shopping Tips Provided by Rethinking Debt November 25, 2011

Categories: Business,Clients,Guest Blog,What's Trending

holiday shopper

Today is the biggest shopping day of the year.  There are so many sales and discounts that many stores open at the crack of dawn and stay open until midnight.  To help you get through the holiday season, Rethinking Debt, in Hauppauge, New York City and in Rochester, provided the following tips.  Rethinking Debt does debt consolidation.

Do not shop while in a hurry or at the last minute.
You’ll end up spending more than you should simply to be able to mark the item off your list. Block out a specific time for shopping.  Make your first trip a leisurely one, simply getting an idea of what’s available this year and at what price.  Take notes, and once back at home, get organized for the actual buying adventure.

Do not shop without a list.
Santa thinks it’s a useful tool, and so should we. Make your list specific.  Don’t just include the names of those for whom you need to purchase a gift, but also include the specific item you’re looking for, and most importantly, the amount you intend to spend.  Having an overall holiday budget floating around in your head isn’t good enough.  Without a plan, you’ll likely get caught up in the hype and overspend in the blink of an eye.

Do not carry your checkbook or more credit cards than you will use during that shopping trip.
If your wallet is lost or stolen, this will limit the damage. Make a copy of the front and back of all credit cards, and put the list in a safe place at home.  In an emergency, you will have easy access to a list of all your cards, the account numbers, and the bank’s Customer Service number to report the incident.

Do not carry large amounts of cash.
Even if you are committed to paying for your purchases with cash, be aware that pick-pockets take advantage of crowded areas and distracted people. Instead, make frequent trips to the ATM to replenish your stash of cash. Or, consider using your debit card for transactions, being sure to hang onto receipts and record in your check register to avoid overdrafts.
