Are we in a race? January 31, 2012

Categories: My Life,My Thoughts

Are we in a race? What’s the Hurry?

I drive a lot.  I find myself driving into and out of the city on most days and then back and forth from my Melville office.

I actually love driving in Manhattan.  I feel like driving is a virtual reality video game where you need to weave in and out of the cars in order not to get hit or to hit anyone.

However, I don’t feel the same way about driving on Long Island.  Long Island drivers are either in a big rush to get somewhere or they are driving in slow motion holding up everyone else!  Those “slo mo” people are impossible to pass and it seems to me, that they are an accident waiting to happen!

I like driving in the left lane and I don’t drive slowly. I do get a lot of tailgaters who try to scare me to move right even though I may be excessively over the speed limit.  Where do they want me to go and how much faster will they be going?

Come on, do people really need to go in excess of 80 on the parkways?  Or, on the other hand, do they have to do 50 in the left hand lane?

Feeling it at the gym January 27, 2012

Categories: My Thoughts

The last couple of months I’ve been feeling stagnant.  I injured my knee and haven’t been motivated to work out.

In December, I decided that enough was enough and that I would push myself. I joined Equinox in Woodbury and started training with a personal trainer two days a week.  On the other days, I decided I would force myself to either run or go spinning.

Every day it’s a struggle.  I have an internal fight with myself.  I don’t want to go and work out. I’d rather do anything else!

But yet, once I push myself, I end up taking that class or running on the treadmill and when I complete my workout, I feel amazing.  I feel like I can breathe better, my stress level goes down and I’m totally relaxed.

The trainer started to teach me how to box.  I always wanted to be a boxer.  I used to admire photos of my grandfather boxing in the 1920’s and 30’s and thought that it looked so cool.

The other day, I had my first lesson. I’m probably one of those uncoordinated people, because when he taught me the four boxing punches, I just couldn’t get them right. A hook? Cross? Jab? Upper?

“Now do them altogether,” he said.

I tried but I was jabbing when I should have been crossing and so on.  I joked to the trainer and told him this was the reason why I was always last to be on a sports team in school. He smiled.  (I knew he was agreeing with me internally but knew that if he agreed externally, my motivation would go way down!)

So what I’m looking for from you are strategies and tips on getting myself to go work out.  I know when I’m finished I feel amazing so why is it so hard to get there?

On Crowing Like a Roster… January 25, 2012

Categories: My Life

Rooster ClockFor the last three weeks, I’ve been getting up at the crack of dawn and feeling compelled to crow like a rooster – “cockadoodle do….”

But I don’t.  I’m not sure what’s holding me back but I know if I do that, I’ll get thrown out of the house by my kids and my husband!  So I hold it in.

Why like a rooster you ask? Well, the last few weeks, I’ve been getting rooster injections into my knee.

Apparently, these injections puts a natural pad between my knee so that when I exercise, I have a natural cushion.  I’ve been going to this doc in the city.  It’s a bit of an ordeal but I’m hoping that it will work and I’ll be able to run again.

Marti, let’s sign up for the next half marathon!
