The HJMT team helped staff the walk by taking photos for Facebook, tweeting about the walk, checking in on Foursquare and even taking videos for YouTube.
As I was sitting at the Facebook table trying to help folks sign up, a woman came up to me. I asked her if she “liked” us on Facebook. She said she didn’t and I let her log into my computer to “like” the JDRF Long Island page.
As she was doing that, she started to tell me the story of her niece who they buried the day before. She passed away at the age of 24 of Type 1 Diabetes. As she shared her story with me, tears began to go down my face. How horrible that a young person should go from this disease!
She told me that her niece was scheduled to be with us at the walk. “She planned on walking with us,” she told me.
I was all choked up. And at that very moment, I realized that life is beautiful and needs to be cherished. And we as a community, need to stand together to help fight some of these deadly diseases that are among us. It’s horrible to live with any type of life long ailment but if we stick together and share our positive energy, we can make a difference.
