Byrne Concert Rocked the House! February 28, 2009

Last night’s David Byrne concert at Radio City Music Hall in NYC, didn’t burn the house, it rocked it!

Byrne played songs that he co-wrote with legendary, Brian Eno. Besides “Burning Down the House,” some of the songs included “I Zimba,” “Take Me to the River,” and “I Feel My Stuff.” He also played all of the songs from his new album that he wrote with Eno.

During the first few songs, the audience stayed seated. But within the first half hour, everyone was up from their seats dancing. I almost felt as if I was back in the 80′s at a Talking Heads Concert. Byrne, his band and dancers were totally awesome!

Last Night I Dreamt of San Pedro…

Categories: My Agency

I didn’t know that Madonna wrote a song about San Pedro Belize. Did you?

Como puede ser verdad
How could it be true?
Last night I dreamt of san pedro
Just like I’d never gone, I knew the song
A young girl with eyes like the desert
It all seems like yesterday, not far away

Tropical the island breeze
All of nature wild and free

This is where I long to be
La isla bonita
And when the samba played
The sun would set so high
Ring through my ears and sting my eyes
Your Spanish lullaby

Last week when we were in San Pedro, Belize, we drove around the island on a golf cart. There were no cars there, just golf carts.

As we were driving a very large woman told us to stop the cart. “I’m telling you about a place that is so beautiful,” she said. “It’s a place that you want to stop and tour around. Come pick out a raffle and see what you won.”

My husband picked one and told me to pick one. “she’s the lucky one,” he said. I reached my hand in and pulled out the first place prize, a trip for four for seven nights, valued at $2,000.

“Oh, my lord, you are so lucky,” the woman said. We later foun out her name was “Mel.” “Now I can stop working for the rest of the day and I earned myself a $100 U.S.!”

I hugged her. She was so excited. My husband and I looked at each other. We knew what this was. It was one of those time shares that would take hours of time until you gave up and told them you would buy something.

When we passed Mel on the road and she was jumping up and down for us to go inside the resort, we told her we would come back later….

Later never came…

Uberchic Here I Come! February 26, 2009

Categories: Business,My Agency,My Thoughts

54th Street (Manhattan) outside of Ed Sullivan...Image via Wikipedia

I met Kennedy Moore, producer of the web site, AskANewYorker.com a few weeks ago at my NYC office. I don’t remember how we originally connected, but I love meeting new people and exploring new opportunities so we met.

Kennedy is a neat person. His site is geared for anyone who wants to ask an average every day New Yorker a question. Some of the frequently asked questions include: “Why is New York called the ‘Big Apple‘?” and “What do I wear to a Broadway show?” Many of the questions are obviously for out of towners visiting our great city!

In addition, Ask A New Yorker.com has a place to buy New York t-shirts and gifts and a useful link for all New Yorkers and out of towners. One of the links is to Hopstop.com which tells you which subways to take. (I find this site quite useful!)

At our meeting, Kennedy Moore immediately pulled out his MP3 recorder and digital camera. I was a little taken back because I didn’t realize that I was being interviewed right then and there! But it was fun. He asked me some interesting and unique type of questions and then I realized that I was being interviewed for his column called “Uberchic.”

It’s pretty funny…. Check it out at http://askanewyorker.com/uberchic.php! Thanks Kennedy for giving me and my firm a nice plug!!!

P.S. The photo below that appears in the Uberchic site is of me in front of a painting of me by Olan, my favorite artist! Check out Olan’s other work at LIPSTICKchic.com!

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Road Test… February 25, 2009

I don’t know about you, but when I took the road test, there was a place for parents to sit, have a cup of coffee and chat with other parents.

Today, I took my daughter to some undisclosed place in Wantagh to take her road test. She had been to this place a few times before with her father, but I didn’t know what to expect. When we got to the set destination, there was a line of cars.

“We need to get in line,” my daughter told me.

Her appointment was at 9 am. We got there about 10 minutes early and waited. We waited and waited and waited. Slowly cars moved up the line. We watched as the potential drivers pulled away and we watched them pull back to the curb. Some cried when they got out and others cheered. They were all about the same age, probably about 17 like my daughter.

As we sat in the car, my daughter talked about her nervousness.

“Just relax,” I said. “I know you’ll do perfect this time.”

“Where do the parents go?” I asked my daughter, changing the subject.

“Ummm…” she said. “You just stand outside and wait.”

“What?” I shouted. “Your kidding right?” And I’m thinking this is very nervy! Here we all took a half day of work, at least provide us with restroom facilities and a nice hot cup of coffee!

When it was our turn, I exited the car and an African American woman with a huge clip board stepped in my place. They were off. I crossed the street and stood with the other parents. It was cold — very cold. I tried jumping up and down to warm up. It didn’t work. I tried making small talk with the other parents. That didn’t work either. The other parent’s children came back. Both were crying — they failed.

My daughter speed up and stopped the car abruptly. I looked at her. I looked at the woman. She was writing up something.

“So how did she do?” I asked.

“She did fine,” she told me.

“Did she pass?”

“Yes.”

“Can I give you a hug and kiss?” I asked the woman. She nodded her head. I gave her a hug and kiss, got into the car and my daughter drove away… We stopped at the next block, cheered and gave each other high fives!

Snorkeling off the coast of San Pedro… February 24, 2009

Categories: My Life,My Thoughts

A giant grouper.Image via Wikipedia

We went snorkeling in San Pedro, Belize with Lil’ Alberto and a whole crew of Americans, including to our surprise, the four people that we went on the Tikal tour with from Idaho!

Alberto told us he named the boat after his son and that he loves his job. He said he felt as if he was on vacation every day! And it definitely showed!

When we got about 7 – 10 miles off the coast, Alberto told us all to exit the boat with our snorkeling gear. He jumped in with us and showed us the most amazing fish. I had seen a lot of the fish before because we used to own a 100 galloon tank, but there were plenty that I had never seen before. The colors were unreal. Even the plants and the eels that wiggled through looked surreal. I felt as if I were peeking into a fish tank or an aquarium.

Every time a fish passed me, he would look at me and I would look back at him. He didn’t seem to care that I was in his space. He just swam away.

There were schools of fish. Each school was different. Alberto explained the various types but you couldn’t quiz me. I just saw colors and big eyes looking at me!

We stayed in the area for almost two hours and then Alberto told us to get back on the boat. He drove us out even further to “shark valley.” This was where we had the opportunity to swim with the sharks and the stingrays. “What fun,” I was thinking to myself sarcastically.

Alberto threw a barracuda in the water and there was a huge shark that came for it. It was probably as big as my son. I don’t think I’ll ever get the picture out of my head of the shark eating that fish, tale first, head last. There was so much blood, it was not a pretty site. After he ate, Alberto picked him up so that everyone can touch him. When I swam over to him, he actually hit me in the face with his tale!

Next Alberto picked up a stingray. He was so soft and silky. I touched the top and the bottom of him. (I’ve never been that close to either a shark or a stingray!)

When we left the boat, the rest of the day was uneventful. It was just relaxing, just what the boss ordered…
