The Secret Envelope…

When we were out to dinner the other night, my son told me that I needed to look in his backpack because there was an important note in a sealed envelope from his teacher. “Why do you always tell me to do things when we’re not home?” I said.

The next day, we were at the local dinner and my son said, “did you check my backpack yet?”

“OMG!” I said, starting to feel like a “bad” mother. So before we ran anymore errands, we raced back to the house, got out of the car, and he ran in. Within minutes, he handed me the secret envelope.

In it were seven letters:

Dear Mrs. Topper, Thank you for coming in and showing us your job. I loved the hat and the brochure. From Aaron

Dear Mrs. Topper, thank you for coming to our class ad telling us about your career as a CEO. The part I really liked about the presentation was when you gave our your business card. I will definitely use it when I graduate college. From Amanda

Dear Mrs. Topper, thank you for coming to our class. I enjoyed your presentation. One day, I might want to join your business. from Azza

Dear Mrs. Topper, thank you for taking time out of your job to come in to talk with us. I liked all the stuff you taught us about your business. Sincerely, Vanessa

Dear Mrs. Topper, thank you for coming to our class. I really enjoyed learning about public relations, marketing, graphic desig and advertising. Thanks for the pen and notebook. From Chelsea

Hilary Topper, I liked you talking about opening your own business while starting out with nothing I also liked you talking about your different branches and your offices. Thanks for taking the time out to see us. From Derek

Mrs. Hilary Topper, I enjoyed your presentation. I am amazed that you went from trying to start a business out of your apartment with not much money and resulting in running a businsess in more than one location. That is amazing. I also wish the best to you and your staff and your business at HJMT COMMUNICATIONS! From Donovan

I smiled to myself when I read these notes. I recently gave a presentation to Mr. Gil’s 5th Grade Class in Long Beach. I wasn’t the only one. There were lots of professionals there talking with the students about career opportunities. Some of the professionals included make up artist, police officer, yoga specialist, mechanic, detective and school principal.

It really made me feel good to know that I may have touched their career paths. It’s important for me to let these students know that there are opportunities out there with or without money to start. I also wanted them to know that they could do anything they set their minds for. It was a good day…
