Girl Scouts Golf Outing – A Hot Event!

It was over 90 degrees today — probably the hottest day of the summer! The Girl Scouts of Nassau County, Inc. held their annual “Go for the Green” Golf Classic.

Kristie Galvani and I were in a foursome with two bankers, Terri and Pat, from Madison National Bank, a new Long Island Bank with branches in Merrick and Melville. We had a really nice time but it was so hot that the four of us felt like we were going to pass out. Throughout the day, I poured water down my back, on my head and was even tempted to throw it at Kristie, but I dared not!

At one point, Kristie and I saw the sprinklers going off. “Come on, let’s take a little detour,” I said. And Kristie took the cart through each of the sprinklers. It was cold and wet and felt so good!

“Where did you guys go?” Terri asked us. We pointed and the next thing we heard were screams from Pat and Terri going through the cold water.

We flubbed a lot of shots. We were so hot it was really hard to play. At another point, all four of our balls went into a bunker and we all decided to give up on the hole. We asked George, our caddy, to retrieve the balls. George was an elderly man in his mid to late 70’s. He walked over to the bunker and the next thing we knew, he fell in! (But, he was okay!)

After golf, we congregated in the ballroom for a lovely buffet dinner and golf awards. The highlight was when a Gold Award recipient spoke about her experiences in scouting. She was so proud to be a Girl Scout and it showed. I had a flash back to the time when I was a Girl Scout, wearing my uniform feeling so proud.

I’m actually still a Girl Scouts, an adult Girl Scout, and proud of it. I’m proud to be part of such a wonderful group of women who really care for the girls who live in our county. Girl Scouts of Nassau County do such wonderful things with limited resources. It’s a group that everyone should get involved with on some level — sponsoring their efforts, volunteering for different activities, or just coming to an event. Every little bit helps the bottom line and goes toward helping all girls grow strong!
