Over? Under? Which Way Do You Place The Toilet Paper?

Until I put up a post on Facebook, I never realized that toilet paper could cause such a heated debate!

Who would think that people actually think about the way the roll should be placed.  I never really thought about it. It never made much of a difference to me. But according to Wikipedia,  60 – 70% of all people do care and they prefer the roll to go over, while the rest specifically want it to be pulled under.

Recently, the issue surfaced when the toilet paper roll was empty and I put in another roll.

“Why do you consistently put the toilet paper under instead of over?” my husband asked me one day.

“That’s the way I like it,” I said.  I wasn’t going to mention to him that I really didn’t care how it went in as long as it’s in! (If you have kids in the house, you will know what I mean. The toilet paper can be anywhere in the bathroom, except where it should be, on the holder!

Out of curiosity, I decided to question my friends on Facebook.  Forty-six people had an opinion.  22 strongly felt that the toilet paper should go over, while only 7 agreed with me by saying under. The rest had a lot of funny comments including:

  • Tearing off each individual sheet when the toilet paper enters the house
  • “It’s really a crap shoot”
  • “Depends”
  • And the list goes on…

Well, one thing is for sure, more people prefer their toilet paper going over and they have strong opinions about it.  So I guess for those of you on the fence, it’s better to go with the majority and keep the peace!  (But, it would be helpful if the toilet paper companies came out with an instruction manual!)
