Surviving the Mall… December 27, 2009

Categories: My Life

Yesterday, I decided to venture out and go shopping.  My first stop was Brooks Brothers in the Americana Mall in Manhasset.  They were having their annual 50% off sale and if you were there before 1 pm, you got an additional 15% off.  Since I had to pick up a suit for my son, I raced over there as early as possible and lucked out by getting 65% off a beautiful pin-stripped suit.

There were so many people at Brooks Brothers.  I didn’t even know they had that many patrons.  People were pushing, shoving and trying to buy as much as possible to capitalize on the big sale. After waiting for about a 1/2 hour, I finally checked out my purchases and was on my way.

The next stop was Roosevelt Field.  The line into the mall was incredible.  It backed up the Meadowbrook Parkway with bumper to bumper cars.  After a long wait, I got to the mall, valet parked because the lot was packed, and was on my way.

If I had seen the video below, I would have been more prepared.  I hope you were prepared and enjoyed the day…

Am I a Portrait? December 26, 2009

Personal Training Overlooking Melbourne Catego...Image via Wikipedia

Today, I was at New York Sports Club doing my usual warm up of 2.5 miles running on the treadmill and then an hour training session with Dominic, my personal trainer.  To finish the workout, Dom told me to do walking lunges.  As I was collecting my ipod and things, one of the “body builders” came over to us.

“I just want to tell you that I have been watching her progress,” he said to Dom.  He was talking with Dom as if I wasn’t there.

“And,” he continued, “I’m really impressed with the work.  You’ve done an amazing job transforming her.  You’re like a Rembrandt!”

Dom smiled and thanked him.  I was trying to hold back the laughter.  All I was thinking was if Dom is Rembrandt then I am a portrait?

It’s Christmas Time, Did You Get Your Update? December 24, 2009

Categories: My Agency

I don’t know about you, but every year I get an update from several members of my extended family.  They talk about their lives, their children’s lives, the travel they did and about their pets.

I get these every year and I think, “who cares?” I don’t want to sound harsh but do I really need to know their kid’s fifth tooth recently came out or that their dog just got a haircut?

Why do they do this?  Why do they send out these updates to a mailing list of people they barely have relationships with?  Is it that they are bragging or feel legitimately proud of the mundane things they do every day?

I get updates from distant relatives I have little or no relationship with and only read about their lives once a year at Christmas time.  Isn’t there something wrong with this picture?

Why aren’t they my friend on Facebook, Twitter, or any other social networking site? If they were, I would feel more of a connection and be happy about their daughter’s fifth tooth coming out or their dog getting a hair cut.

Junk Mail? December 23, 2009

Categories: Business

This time of the year we all get so much mail.  It’s actually nice, especially since there’s very little physical mail these days but lots of cluttered emails.

Do you get pieces of mail addressed to either employees who haven’t been with you for years or employees who never even worked with you?

The other day, I received a magazine addressed to Albert Kipsky at HJMT COMMUNICATIONS, LLC.  We never had an Albert…

How do these people gather their lists?
