Twitter and the Long Island Association…

Categories: Business,My Thoughts,Social Media

Social Media and PoliticsThe other day, I attended the Long Island Association annual breakfast meeting with both Nassau County and Suffolk County Executives – Ed Mangano and Steven Bellone.

I was really impressed with both of them.

As they spoke, I checked in on Foursquare.  I noticed that there were three other people signed in from a room of more than 500 people. I wondered why no one else checked in.

Ed Mangano signed in, but I don’t think he actually checked in because I wrote him a message and he didn’t respond to me.  It led me to believe that although he may be on this site, he has someone else managing it.  (If I were County Executive, I would certainly check and respond to comments, but I guess that’s me…)

I looked at Twitter to see if anyone was writing anything about what the two execs were saying. You know what I found?

NOTHING!

I was shocked.  We live in a digital age and here there are 500 people in the room and no one has anything to say?  I really found that hard to believe.

I also checked out their Facebook pages and you know what I found?  A lot of self-promotion!  I’m surprised that they didn’t learn anything from President Barak Obama.  He and his staff knew how to engage an audience and develop a following.
I have nothing bad to say about either Ed or Steve.  I think highly of both of them.  They are both good people.  But when Ed says that he’s gotten a lot of flack about proposals, don’t you think that wouldn’t be the case if he knew how to use social media the right way?

Are We So Conditioned Like Pavlov’s Dog? January 23, 2012

Categories: My Life,My Thoughts

Pavlov DogThings happen, we respond.  That’s a fact of life.  But we all seem to have a little piece of Pavlov’s dog in us, as soon as we step foot on a plane.

The two bells in the beginning of the flight means the front door is closed and locked.  Then, the captain always says, “turn off anything with an on-off switch.” The flight attendants go through their drill about the exit doors, seat belts (as if no one knows how to buckle a belt), seat cushions turn into floating devices, and so on. And then walk around the plane.  It’s always the same protocol, every time.

Once the plane lands and is at the gate, everyone on the plane knows what that means. As soon as the two bells ring, everyone is out of their seats!  It doesn’t matter that the door isn’t open and no one is moving.  It doesn’t matter that everyone is squished in the aisle.  And, it doesn’t matter if bags get placed on toes.

What matters is, the bell goes off and everyone reacts just like Pavlov’s dog.

Keeping a Memory Alive by Kristie Galvani January 19, 2012

Categories: Guest Blog,Kristie's Korner

I am fortunate enough to have family support to help me watch my son during the week. My mother and my mother-in-law each watch him two days a week. When Jack was first born, Hilary allowed me to work from home for the one remaining day, which was great. However, when he turned one I decided it was getting a little hard to work from home and it would be good for him to be around other kids so I started exploring day care options. I was very fortunate to stumble upon the Giggle Patch, http://www.thegigglepatch.com, located in Wantagh, New York. My son loves this in-home day care. He gets excited to go every week and I feel very comfortable knowing that the staff treats my child just like family would.

I recently received an email from the day care owner, Sandi that made me realize how incredibly special she was. Sandi’s teenage daughter was killed while crossing Sunrise Highway just a little more than a year ago. The fact that she continues to provide so much love to her family and other families is incredible. I wanted to share something good that is being done in the wake of this tragedy.

Sandi’s daughter Brittany, an artist and musician, was special to many and a group of her close friends Jon, Alex, and Dan sought to ease their pain through writing poems and songs in her memory.  What began as a very informal and tumultuous beginning quickly became much more serious when Alex’s father, record producer/songwriter, Russ DeSalvo (Carlos Santana, Celine Dion) heard the group playing together and asked them to record a cover song at his studio. Out of this spawned the band, “ Count To Ten.” Over the past month, Count To Ten has aligned with New York-based independent record label, Airgo Musi and are in the process of launching a grassroots marketing campaign around Count To Ten’s holiday single, “The Only Gift I Need Tonight.”

I know it’s past the Holidays but please pass around the music video, http://www.youtube.com/airgomusic or check out the band’s website at http://counttotenmusic.com. Brittany, who was an avid music lover herself, would no doubt appreciate the effort that these young men are exerting to keep her memory alive.
