Do You Foursquare?

When I first read about Foursquare in Mashable, I got excited.  A new social networking site to me is like un-chartered territory for others.

When I first signed in to Foursquare, I didn’t get it.  I thought it was just a variation of Brightkite.  But once I got into it, I realized it takes social networking one step further and is a great site for marketers!

As a consumer, you sign up and can check in to different locations no matter where you are.  You may even find yourself in the same vicinity as a friend or co-worker and have an opportunity to connect.

In addition to that, every time you check in to a restaurant or bar, you unlock information.  For example, if you are at a restaurant and you log in, you may find that there are particular items on the menu that you must order or must avoid.  When you give a tip on a restaurant or attraction, everyone who frequents that restaurant or attraction can read what you said.

When you check into various places, you earn points and eventually can become the “mayor” of a place.  By becoming the Mayor, you may find yourself winning freebies – free coffee, free ice cream and even free hotel stays.

The cool thing is, it easily integrates with Twitter and Facebook. Foursquare is used primarily on your mobile phone but you can easily see stats, your history and even your friends on your PC or Mac.

For restaurants and other businesses, foursquare is a great way to promote your business.  You can offer free stuff to your customers using Foursquare.  Once you have a mayor, you can offer something really special!

My 2 Cents:
When preparing your social media plan, consider incorporating Foursquare.  As more and more people get on the site, your audience reach will expand and you can expand it even more by offering giveaways and promotions.  It’s a great site for anyone who owns a business!
