A Love Affair with New York City

Central Park

There’s something magical about Manhattan. It’s a place that gets under your skin, weaving itself into your identity in a way that’s hard to explain to anyone who hasn’t lived here. For me, Manhattan has always been more than just a city—it always felt like home, and it’s truly been A Love Affair with New York City for me.

A Love Affair with the City

In my late teens and early 20s, I lived in Manhattan and loved every moment of it. The culture, the endless entertainment, the art museums, the shopping—it was everything I could have dreamed of and more. I never wanted to leave. But life has a way of steering you in unexpected directions.

When it came time to settle down and buy a home, we realized that staying in Manhattan wasn’t financially feasible. We asked our family for help, but when they said no, we made the difficult decision to leave. We moved back to Long Beach, the town where we both grew up, and started a new chapter there.

Life After Manhattan

Long Beach was good to us for many years, but after Hurricane Sandy, everything changed. Our home was rebuilt and our furniture replaced, but the experience left us uneasy about living so close to the water. That’s when we decided to move inland, settling in North Merrick.

North Merrick has been a wonderful place to live. It’s quiet and family-friendly, and it has given us a sense of stability. But as much as we’ve loved it, it’s never quite measured up to the energy and vibrancy of Manhattan. Still, the heart of my Love Affair with New York City beats strong here.

A Dream Realized

Recently, we decided it was time to make Manhattan a part of our lives again. While many of our friends were buying second homes in Florida, we chose to invest in a second home in New York City. It just felt right. Our kids are here, and New York has always been where our hearts are.

Moving back to Manhattan has been like coming full circle. In the few weeks since we moved in, I’ve been struck by how friendly and welcoming everyone has been. It’s funny—Manhattan has a reputation for being fast-paced and impersonal, but my experience has been the opposite. Whether I’m asking someone about the bus schedule or just chatting with a neighbor, people have been incredibly kind and helpful. It’s a warmth I haven’t felt anywhere else, not even on Long Island.

Why Manhattan Will Always Be Home

There’s a unique energy in Manhattan that you can’t find anywhere else. It’s in the way the city never sleeps, the way art and culture are woven into the fabric of everyday life, and the way every street feels like it has a story to tell.

For me, moving back to Manhattan isn’t just about geography—it’s about reconnecting with a part of myself that I’ve missed. It’s about embracing the city that has always felt like home, even when I wasn’t living here.

If you’ve ever considered making Manhattan your home—or coming back to it—I can’t recommend it enough. There’s no place quite like it, and for me, there’s no place I’d rather be. Ultimately, it’s truly about A Love Affair with New York City that never really ends.
