Bejiing 2008 – Did You Watch the Opening Ceremony?

news.jpegI did. If you didn’t, you missed out. The Chinese government spent $300 million dollars on this Olympics and it certainly showed by the opening act.

2,008 drummers, dressed in white gowns with one red strip, did the countdown. Using lights, fireworks and lots of effects, the drumers stayed in unison. No one made a mistake. It was perfect!

Following the drummers, 56 Chinese children from 56 different ethnic groups in China marched wearing traditional ethnic garb.

Then I fell asleep…. I was in a deep, deep sleep.

When I awoke, I watched the athletes from all different countries march around the stadium. The best part was their outfits, each was more ridiculous then the next! The Hungarians looked like the end of Bonnie and Clyde when they were riddled with bullet holes. The US team was dressed by Ralph Lauren. They wore silly white wrinkled caps and blazers that looked like they were taken from the sports casters on NBC sports!

Then the speeches. They always say the same thing. Someone should review what they said four years earlier in a different city and change it up a bit. Don’t you think?

Before the torch was lit, the President of the People’s Republic of China, said “let the games begin!”

Interestingly, the flame went 130 days to 130 different cities before coming to the bird’s nest . It was eventually handed to Athlete, Lee Ning who was elevated up, or as a reporter said, he was transformed into a gymnist, with torch in hand and circled around the top of the “bird’s nest.”

When he finally lit the torch, it was a site to see. And again, fireworks brightened the sky! (The Chinese use a lot of fireworks! It was really spectacular!)

If you missed it, try to catch it on tevo or Youtube. It’s definitely worth watching!
