Hilary’s Top 9 Things to Do in Prague…

1) Walk across the Charles Bridge – See breathtaking views of historic buildings that look like castles and also be strolling with hundreds of other people while looking at unique art and interesting hand-made jewelry.

2) Hang out in Old Town Square – See the old clock tower, lots of beautiful architecture and listen to the street peddlers play their instruments. It’s a great place to relax and take a load off your tired feet!

3) Prague Castle – This is a half-day tour around the castle and the cathedrals. If you purchase a headset, you will get a glimpse into the history of the Czech Republic.

4) Old New Synagogue – Throughout Europe, many temples and synagogues were burned or destroyed by the Nazi party, but this one still stands. It’s the oldest Jewish synagogue around today. It was built in 1270 and worth the visit.

5) Trdelnik – Is not a place, but a thing to buy and eat and it’s incredibly delicious! It’s a cross between a pretzel and a cinnamon stick and is totally yummy.  (I wouldn’t worry too much about the calories. Prague is a walking city and you will certainly burn them off.)

6) Jewish Cemetery, Spanish Synagogue and the Jewish Museum – This is a half-day tour and well worth it. The cemetery has more than 10,000 bodies buried in a place that only holds 1,200 tombstones. The Jews were not allowed to be buried anywhere else so they had to bury their dead on top of each other. You have never seen anything like this.  In addition, the Jewish Museum, which consists of the cemetery and five synagogues shows life before the Nazi’s invaded the area. According to fact, Hitler didn’t destroy this area because he felt that once the Jewish people were exterminated, he would use it as a museum to show what life was like for these people. It was moving and touching and definitely on my top 10 list.

7) John Lennon Peace Wall – It started with a painting of John Lennon after he was shot in 1980 and followed with a slew of sayings and other graffiti art work. The wall constantly changes.  Every minute, someone who visits the wall changes it. It’s an interesting art in progress that constantly evolves.

8) Petrin Observation Tower – If you are afraid of heights, forget it.  I had a bit of an anxiety attack myself climbing the second level. It is scary but the views are magnificent.

9) Eat, Eat and Eat — The food is great. Personally, I didn’t think I would like it, but I really did. We ate at relatively inexpensive places including: Sara Bernhardt, Grand Cafe Orient and Uchnusa.  All worth the mention.

P.S. We stayed at the Hotel Century.  This building is a historic landmark, for Franz Kafka used to work here in room 214 as an insurance broker by day.
