“Murder Across the Ocean” by Charlene Wexler is an engrossing mystery novel. It effortlessly intertwines a romantic subplot with a captivating whodunit. Set against the backdrop of London, the book offers readers an engaging and fast-paced narrative that will keep you hooked from start to finish.
What is it about?
The story’s protagonist is the 70-year-old Lori Brill, a character whose spirit and vivacity defy her age. Lori is from Arizona and lives in a retirement community. But, her life quickly catapults her into an overseas adventure when she decides to visit her granddaughter in London.
During her flight, Lori unexpectedly reconnects with Josh Wheeler, a man who has been a part of her life for quite some time. Their relationship takes a passionate turn, leading to a night of romance, only to be abruptly cut short by a shocking event the next morning. Josh Wheeler is shot while Lori is in the shower, setting the stage for the central mystery of the book.
The intrigue spirals out from there, as Lori finds herself entangled in the complex web of a Ponzi scheme that Josh was involved in. The question of who shot Josh Wheeler and why forms the crux of the story, keeping readers on the edge of their seats.
There are some subplots as well with her granddaughter, Cate and her boyfriends.
My thougthts:
Wexler’s writing style is commendable. She keeps the narrative moving at a brisk pace, ensuring that readers are constantly engaged. The plot is well-structured and the mystery is well-executed, making it a truly enjoyable read.
However, there is one aspect of the book that may irk some readers. Despite Lori being a 70-year-old woman full of vitality and zest for life, she is often referred to as an ‘old lady’. This characterization seems rather unfair and can potentially disrupt the reader’s connection with Lori. Nonetheless, this minor flaw does not significantly detract from the overall reading experience.
“Murder Across the Ocean” is a well-written mystery novel that offers a compelling narrative, an intriguing mystery, and a lovable protagonist. Despite the occasional misstep in character portrayal, the book succeeds in providing an entertaining and captivating read.
Whether you’re a fan of mysteries, romance, or simply love a good story, this book is sure to be a delightful addition to your reading list.
