On Making The Music…

I’ve been working out now with a trainer for a year.  When I signed up for the gym last August, I was 25 heavier than I am now. Within four months of exercising and just watching what I ate, I lost the weight. Now a year later, I’m still at the same weight but I’m starting to build muscle and I like it!

I decided to take a class at the New York Sports Club in Hicksville.  The class focused on weight training.  Since I was unable to see my trainer during the week, I decided I would give it a try.  I was packed in the room with nearly 30 other men and women all waiting for the instructor to tell us what to do.  After an hour, I looked down at my calorie counter/heart rate monitor and noticed that I only burned 190 calories.

When I go to the gym to work out with a trainer I burn between 500 and 1500 calories.  So when I saw that I only burned 190 I smiled.  I was having doubts about the training.  Do I really need to go three times a week? Is it really doing anything for me? But when I saw that number I realized that it is important for me to go.  And, when I’m training with a trainer, I feel like I’m on a journey, a tough journey but a journey no less.

The other night I wrote to one of my trainers and told him that I was getting a lot of complements lately.   He answered me by saying, “You’re the one making the music, I’m only the conductor!”

I thought about that for a moment, thought about the journey and realized he’s right.  He is a conductor and I am making music.
