A few weeks ago, we embarked on a trip upstate to Pine Plains, NY, to visit some dear friends. As part of our getaway, we were drawn to Stissing House, a restaurant highly recommended by my daughter. Nestled in a quaint yet vibrant part of town, Stissing House beckons with its unique New York charm, a blend of history and modernity that piques your curiosity.
Stissing House in Pine Plains, NY
Upon entering, the atmosphere immediately struck us as quintessentially NYish. The decor blends rustic elements with modern elegance, creating a cozy yet stylish ambiance. Dim lighting, exposed brick walls, and wood furnishings set the stage for what we hoped would be a memorable dining experience.
Our culinary journey began with appetizers of shrimp and scallops. The scallops, a true culinary gem, were presented in a shell, a sight to behold. Despite their modest number, their taste was a revelation—fresh, tender, and exquisitely seasoned. The shrimp, though petite, were a delightful accompaniment to the star of the show, the scallops.
Main Course at Stissings House
Our friends opted for the fish pie for our main course while we chose the chicken dish. The fish pie was hearty and flavorful, featuring a mix of fresh fish enveloped in a creamy sauce and topped with a golden, flaky potato crust. On the other hand, our chicken dish was well-prepared and satisfying but didn’t quite reach the heights of culinary excellence. It was good—solid comfort food—but not something that left a lasting impression.
One of the standout aspects of our meal was the wine selection. The wine we chose was incredible, enhancing the flavors of our dishes and adding a touch of sophistication to the meal. My husband’s recommendation was spot on, making the dining experience all the more enjoyable.
Expensive meal?
However, it’s worth noting that Stissing House is on the pricier side. Our meal for two couples came to around $200 per couple, which is steep but somewhat expected given the ambiance and quality of the ingredients used.
Stissing House in Pine Plains, NY, offered a delightful dining experience, albeit with a few caveats. The atmosphere is charming and distinctly New York, making it a great spot for a special occasion or a weekend getaway meal. The food, while good, didn’t quite reach the heights of greatness but was enjoyable nonetheless. The appetizers, particularly the scallops, were a highlight, and the wine selection was exceptional.
Be prepared for a pricey bill, but if you’re looking for a unique dining experience in a charming setting, Stissing House is worth a visit.
