New Art in the White House?

Categories: My Life

In the Friday, May 22nd edition of the Wall Street Journal, an article on “Changing the Art on the White House Walls” was the cover story of the Weekend Edition. Apparently, some of the more classic paintings are being traded in for more modern art done by people of color. Many of the museums around the country have been offering their art collection as a loan.

According to the article, the Obama’s have been interested in modern art for a long time. Their Hyde Park home in Chicago featured many new modern artists along with black and white photographs. The article said that one of the first dates, the Obama’s went on was the Art Institute of Chicago.

The article put a smile on my face. It’s about time a President recognized the joy that art brings to the soul. I applaud President Obama and his wife for changing the art collection in the White House to incorporate today’s modern art with art painted in colonial times.

Categories: My Agency

People asks me all the time, whether or not they should just have a Facebook page or just a Twitter page or just a LinkedIn page. And I tell them, “to build a community, you need to open a few social networking platforms.”

On my latest Your Business Channel (YBC) show, I talk about social media sites and some of tips and strategies to get you started. I hope you enjoy. Let me know if you have any feedback on any future shows…. Hilary

Rochester, Wegman’s and Voting… May 21, 2009

Hmmmm…. I’m reflecting on the past two days…. Yesterday I flew into Rochester to meet with Lisa Gordon, Supervisor of HJMT. I also met with one of our clients, some new Rochester friends and spoke at Monroe Community College at a Social Media 101 seminar. It was a busy couple of days.

I was happy Lisa and I were able to eat a quick bite at my favorite restaurant in Wegman’s – Tastings! We had a trio of tuna that was truly incredible! (Every bite was better then the next.)

May 19th marked the day that the general public voted on their school district budgets. We went to Penfield to see how it was going. It was really very interesting the way they read the voting machines. And there were so many people watching!

Congratulations to Penfield School District on passing their bond in Rochester and also congratulations to our friends at Carle Place Public Schools on Long Island. We’ve worked with Carle Place for many years now and they too are a very special district!

Traffic All the Time!

Categories: Business,My Agency

The author of this image is me, David Shankbon...Image via Wikipedia

I can’t stand it anymore! There is traffic everywhere all the time. I’m not sure why. I understand that there is rush hour traffic between the hours of 7 am – 10 am and 4 pm – 7 pm. But come on guys… Just because we live in a metropolitan area doesn’t mean that it has to take all of us 2 – 4 hours to get somewhere relatively close, does it???

Yesterday, I arrived at JFK Airport at 3 pm. I picked up my car with no problem and drove onto the Belt Parkway. What a mistake! It was bumper to bumper traffic. URRGH!!!!! It only took me three hours to get home, which should normally take 1/2 hour.

Today was no better. I had a meeting in NYC at lunchtime. I drove into the city and it took about a 1/2 hour to get in. Once I was there, I couldn’t make any turns until 6th Avenue. That was frustrating. But more frustrating was on the way home. It was only 3 pm. It took me almost three hours to get back to my Long Island office. I was so mad, furious and disappointed at the same time. (Disappointed because I should have taken my computer with me so I didn’t have to come back to the Westbury office.)

Traffic really sticks but it’s a way of life for us living in the NYC Metropolitan area. I guess one would say, “stay or get off the ship!” I think I’ll stay for a while….
