Trend of the Week — A 1932 Ford in 2011… July 25, 2011

Categories: Trend of the Week

This week’s trend of the week is a 1932 Ford that I recently saw in a parking lot at the Bone Fish Grill in Wellington. I asked the owners if I could take a quick photo of them with the car.  This is what you see here.

Do you have a car that you would like to share with our readers?

A Real Estate Issue?

Categories: Business

I got a call the other day from a past client who owns a real estate firm. It was so nice to hear from him since we often don’t talk. We worked for him almost three years ago, maybe more.

At first, he was very nice and told me that he was enjoying the summer since it wasn’t his busy time. Then, he turned.

“You know Hilary, you really hurt me,” he said.

“WHAT? HOW?” I said.

“I met with you a year ago and talked with you about relocating and then I recently found out that you went with another broker.”

“That’s not true,” I said. “I actually used a broker and really thought he was wonderful but we ended up going direct to a landlord.”

“If that’s the case then you got a bad deal,” he told me.  ”We could have gotten you such a sweet deal and you blew it.  Not only that, but you hurt me in the process.”

I felt terrible.  ”I never meant to hurt you,” I said as if I was breaking up with a boyfriend. “I knew the landlord and I felt he gave me a good deal. And anyway, my husband is a real estate lawyer and he carefully reviewed the contract. I’m sorry if I hurt you.”

He didn’t accept my apology.  We parted ways and he said he wished me the best and then he hung up.

I started to think about the other real estate guy who took us to a number of different buildings.  I actually felt bad for him because I didn’t use his services.  But you know what, he wrote to me and wished me luck on the move and told me there were no hard feelings.  As a matter of fact, he even said that he may hire us for a project he is working on.

Isn’t it amazing how different people handle similar situations?

Music Review: The Red Button – As Far As Yesterday July 22, 2011

Categories: Reviews

I reviewed Seth Swirsky’s album, Watercolor Day, and really enjoyed it. So when I heard that Seth Swirsky was involved in another project, I got excited.

His latest project is The Red Button, which consists of Swirsky and Mike Ruekberg. Their first work together was called She’s About To Cross My Mind. Their new album, As Far As Yesterday Goes, includes 12 pop songs. It opens with “Caught in the Middle” which is a strong pop song that sounds a little like The Beatles.

Actually, the whole album sounds like songs that I used to listen to when I was growing up. I felt as if the album took me back to that distant past when life seemed simple and all music was fun and bubble gum pop. I even remember when I was in middle school, these two students walked around the school with their guitars singing CSN and other harmonic melodies. Those days seemed as if there were no worries in the world. This album reminds me of those days.

“As Far as Yesterday Goes,” the title track, has nice harmonies. Actually, the whole album has nice harmonies!

All of the songs were written by both Swirsky and Ruekberg, except “Genevieve”, “Sandreen,” and “Do Something to Me,” which were written by Swirsky.

One of the strongest songs on the album is “Girl Don’t.” In my opinion, it has a strong pop rock beat coupled with harmonies that just make you want to bop up and down in your seat.

“On a Summer’s Day” is a cute playful song. If you go to The Red Button web site, you will see a video of this song. The video starts with a girl walking in a beautiful green field with scattered trees. She walks through the tall grass in her underwear. As she walks, clothes drop from the sky and she puts them on. By mid song, she has practically everything on in this “summer day.” She falls to the ground because the clothes are too heavy and slowly the wind takes the clothes from her and then throws it back down over her. I’m not sure what the video has to do with the song, but it’s cute like the song.

“You Do Something To Me” is a sweet love song that makes you want to sway your body to the beat of the rhythm. I really enjoyed the guitar picking in this song. It’s one of those catchy tunes that you just want to sing along to.

I think my favorite song on the album is “Running Away.” They sing “running away, running away from myself.” It almost reminded me of a cross between Harry Nilsson and Harry Chapin.

All the songs have a “love” theme, are soothing, and have a mellow rhythm. If you love the music from the 1960s and early 1970s, you will love this album.

On Living In My Car… July 21, 2011

Categories: My Life

My car is my second home or I might say it’s my fourth office.  I’m serious.  I spend most of my day driving to and from appointments and back and forth from HJMT‘s three offices — Long Island, Manhattan and Rochester.  I put on so many miles and put so much gas in my car, it’s a little ridiculous.

The other day, I was driving one of my colleagues around and I started to tell her what I have in my trunk:

  • a blanket (just in case)
  • two sweatshirts
  • an umbrella (no, actually three umbrellas just in case I have company with me)
  • a beach chair (even though I don’t go to the beach)
  • my running bag with all my running gear in it
  • an extra running outfit and two pairs of sneakers
  • my gym bag with towels, clean underwear and a bathing suit
  • a shovel (to dig myself out in the winter)
  • a first aid kit (hey, you never know)
  • extra clothes (pants, shirts, three pairs of shoes)
  • spare pair of glasses and sunglasses
  • and more…

I can stay overnight somewhere and have everything I need for the next day. It’s amazing how much stuff you accumulate, especially in your car!  Tell me something unusual that you have in your car…

A Runner’s Diary: Keep On Pushing! July 20, 2011

Categories: A Runner's Diary

My daughter and I got to the public school building on 81st Street between Park and Madison with plenty of time to spare. We sat in my car, which was parked outside, waiting for our running club to start.  We talked for a little while before entering the auditorium.

Once we were in the auditorium, we sat down and looked around. Everyone looked like a “real” runner. No one looked familiar at all. At about 6:30, we both looked at each other and realized that something was wrong. The class usually starts on time at 6:15 pm.

“Should I ask one of the coaches or should we just hang here?” I asked my daughter. She shook her head. I let a few more minutes go by and I decided to ask a coach who was standing by the door.

“That class is already upstairs stretching,” she said. I went back to tell my daughter and we quickly ran up three flights of stairs to the gymnasium. We both laughed the entire way up.

When we got upstairs there was a group of people sitting on the floor waiting for the coaches to come back. “Did you guys stretch yet?” I asked one of the women on the floor.

“Yes, a long time ago,” she said. “We’re just waiting to go out .”

I rolled my eyes. My daughter and I started to stretch out as best as we could until the coaches came back into the gymnasium.

“Okay, for all you beginner/intermediates, we are running the great lawn in Central Park,” the coach said.

We split up into groups and off we ran down the stairs and out the school door onto the street. We ran two blocks to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and ran to the Great Lawn. “This is just a warm up,” the coach told us.

“Now, we’re going to try something new,” the coach explained. “We’re going to do a centipede. Does anyone know what that means?”

I didn’t. So the coach explained to me that we will split into two groups, a fast group and a slow group. We will circle around the Great Lawn for at least 20 minutes without stopping. Everyone will be running in a line and the last one on the line needs to speed up as fast as possible to get in front of the first person on line.

The coaches put my daughter and me into the fast group. The next thing we knew we were off and running. The slow pace wasn’t so slow and the fast pace was extremely fast! We must have gone around the Great Lawn about four times.

Every time the woman behind me took off, I took off after her. She was fast. I went fast too. I was breathing so hard that everyone in the line could hear me.

The last four minutes were incredibly hard. We were all so tired. It was funny because there was one woman who told me that she was transferred from the intermediate class down to our class and she walked most of the way, but her walk was as fast as our run.

We had a couple of older women in our line and boy could they run. I couldn’t believe how fast this one woman in particular could run!

When we were finished, one of the men in the group said to me, “Thanks for leading us on. You kept us motivated.” I was shocked but it made me feel really good.
