Fast Pass, is it discriminatory?

We met my good friends, Madeline and Steve for breakfast along with their son, David, and his three children. We were talking about Great Adventure and how for some extra cash, anyone can get a “fast pass” which enables them to go on rides quicker then the average patron.

“That’s terrible,” said David. “It discriminates against poor people! If you can’t afford, your on the back of the line but if you have money, you can go to the front. It’s separate but equal all over again!”

“They all do this,” my husband, Brian said. “Look at Disney. They were the first to implement a fast pass. For $50 or so more, you can go on five rides instead of two or three….”

The conversation made me think…

  • Is it discriminatory to offer a fast pass alternative?
  • Should the parks charge a little more and have less people allowed so that everyone has the same opportunities to go on as many rides as they want?
  • Should you buy tickets before you go? (The amusement park can limit tickets sold.)

What do you think? Is it fair to offer fast passes at amusement parks?
