Moustache Brewing Co. Raises Capital Via Social Networking!

When Brendan Stanton of Meltzer Lippe Law Firm reached out to me the other day and told me about his friend who wanted to form a local brewery, I wasn’t too impressed.  But when he told me that they were raising money via a new social networking site that crowd sources, my ears perked up!

The site, called Kickstarter, is where people who are looking for seed money to start their business can go and “get it done!” They have had dozens and dozens of companies with a lot of success.  Basically, you pick the amount of time you need to raise the capital and how much you want to raise.  Then, you develop an amazing youtube video and share it with your social networking community.

That’s exactly what Laurie and Matthew Spitz did.  The two are working class people who have a dream of creating their own brewery.  Since they had no collateral, the banks wouldn’t lend them money.  Their family and friends said they would give them a little but weren’t able to give them the start up money they needed to rent a location and purchase equipment for their Long Island brewery.  So they turned to Kickstarter.com.

They created an outstanding video, see below, and had a compelling story.  With nearly five days to go, they raised their $25,000 and then some!

On Kickstarter.com, they had pledges ranging from $5 to $10,000.  With each pledge, Laurie and Matthew promised to send out swag ranging from a tee-shirt with the Moustache Brewing Company logo to the naming rights on one of their new beers.  Pretty cool stuff huh?

At the time that I wrote this post they had more than 430 backers!  Although I never met either one of them, I was so impressed with these two people!  Although they had a ton of obstacles, they took their dream and decided to follow it.  Now that they have their seed money, I know they will do great things with their new Brewery, which once up and running, they plan to sell beer to local bars and pubs throughout the area.
