On Getting to the Gym at 5:50 a.m.

I’m not trying to brag here.  I am just stating a point that I got up at 4:30 am this morning to go to the gym.  I wanted to check out a boxing class at 5:45 am.  I left my house at 5:15 am and had a feeling I wouldn’t make it.

As I drove through Jones Beach, up the Wantagh Parkway onto the Seaford Oyster Bay, I kept thinking – relax, if you don’t make it, you can do something else….

Once I was on the Seaford Oyster Bay, I knew it would take me 15 minutes to get there. There was no way I would be able to get to the class on time.

I got to the gym at 5:50 am. The receptionist told me to join the class even though I was five minutes late. I put my stuff down in the locker and hurried upstairs.

When I looked in the window, the class started, everyone was wearing their boxing gloves and I was standing alone outside the class.

I realized I didn’t have boxing gloves with me.  How could I go in without boxing gloves when everyone else was wearing them?

One women who past me and saw me looking in told me to borrow boxing gloves from the trainers.  One trainer said to me, “I don’t think you want to do that.”

I went to the back of the gym where the gloves and a punching bag were located.  I put on the gloves and started to punch the bag – hook, cross, upper… I went fast and my heart race sped.

Should I go into the class?  I took off the gloves, smelled my hands and decided to disinfect my hands before working out any more.  They smelled horribly!  The answer was no, I was not going to wear those gloves any longer to go into the class.  So, I designed my own routine:

–    ran on the treadmill
–    went on the elliptical machine
–    did a series of weight lifting machines
–    stretched out on the floor mats

The hour went by quickly.  I decided to go into the steam room, take a shower and go to work.

As I was drying my hair, a woman told me she was jealous that I was finished.  It was now 7:15 am.  “Don’t be,” I said, “I left my house at the crack of dawn.”

Before I left the gym, I went to get a cup of coffee from the snack shop.  “Wow, I’m so jealous,” another woman said to me.

I just smiled and walked away knowing that I got up at the crack of dawn and instead of getting discouraged that I didn’t have the right equipment and got to the class late, I still exercised.  There were no excuses at that point!
