On Holiday Parties…

I am totally exhausted from all the holiday parties and there are still a lot more to go! Many companies, like Markum & Kleigman, a large accounting firm in NY and LI, have canceled their holiday party. The M&K party is always so nice. We were all very disappointed that it was canceled due to the economy.

Did you cancel your holiday party? What do you think it says about your company?

It seems that M&K are the minority. Although there are major layoffs in all different industries, it seems to me that most companies kept their holiday parties.

The first one I went to this season was the Topper Realty party, held in a private home. It was nicely catered by Corine’s and there was a magician, a cartoonist and special guest appearances.

The next one was my EO (Entrepreneurs Organization) Forum party, held at Orange Epicerie on Hester Street and Ludlow in Manhattan on the lower east side. (I didn’t even know there was anything down there to be honest.) There were 13 of us. Although I felt like we were having dinner in a typical NYC deli with a huge butcher block table in the center and high chairs all around, the food and the company were great!

The next night, there was a party at our Manhattan building for all the tenants. There was a small band, lots of food and drink and everyone seemed to be getting along just fine!

When I got there, I introduced myself to an elderly couple. They looked at me and didn’t say anything.

“So what do you do?” I asked them.

“We own a private family foundation,” the woman said but she really didn’t want to talk or be bothered by anyone.

“How lovely,” Kristie said, protecting me from saying anything else.

Well, maybe not everyone was in the holiday spirit this week!

Last night, I asked Kristie to join me at the EO (Entrepreneurs Organization) Annual Holiday Party at Prime on 28th street in Manhattan. They had a live swing band, swing dancers and lots of alcohol! There wasn’t much food though — very little hors deourvres and when Kristie and I went to get a plate, there was only macaroni and salad. Despite that, it was another fun night!

This morning at the wee hours of the morning, the Long Island Forum for Technology (LIFT) had their Board meeting and annual holiday celebration. It was nice to see everyone, but at 8 am after getting home past midnight was tough!

Tonight, I was invited to another party at the Southstreet Seaport at a private home and this weekend, we have at least two holiday parties!

Next week it doesn’t end either! The HJMT holiday party is Thursday night at the Oheka Castle. I wanted to reward the staff with something really nice to celebrate the holidays so I booked it there!

I guess the bottom line here is… just enjoy the parties and all the good things that life has to offer…
