The Pros and Cons of Owning Two Homes

Manhattan

For a long time, my husband and I dreamed about having a second home. The idea of owning two homes was so appealing—a place to escape to. Somewhere different from our everyday routine. What we didn’t realize was just how long the search would take, and how many twists and turns we’d hit along the way.

Our Search Started Upstate

At first, we looked at upstate New York. There’s something so charming about that part of the state. The rolling hills, the fresh air, the small-town feel. We pictured cozy weekends surrounded by nature.

But every time we mapped out the drive, our excitement faded a little. Three, four, sometimes five hours in the car? That’s a long haul when you just want to unwind. We kept asking ourselves, “Would we actually go there enough to make it worth it?”

Then We Tried Vermont

Next, we set our sights on Vermont, near Mt. Snow. I love that area. The scenery is gorgeous, and the idea of ski weekends sounds wonderful.

Yet nothing really clicked for us. And once again, that long drive loomed over every decision. The distance just kept pulling us back to reality.

A Change of Plans in Manhattan

Everything shifted when our friends Steve and Mad bought an apartment in Manhattan. Suddenly, a whole new idea opened up. Why not look in the city, too?

At first, we thought about buying in their building. How fun would that be, living steps away from good friends? But between the ongoing construction and the pricing, the aggravation just wasn’t worth it. So we widened our search a bit.

And that’s when we found it — a building right down the block. The apartment was fully renovated, a Jr. 4 with one bathroom. It was compact, polished, and just perfect. I like to describe it as “a perfect hotel room we can call our own.”

We were thrilled. But once we settled in, we quickly learned that living in two places comes with its own set of surprises.

The Cons of Two Homes

You Forget Where You Are

I’ll be honest — the biggest challenge caught me off guard. Sometimes you wake up and genuinely feel disoriented. Am I in the city? Am I home? For a few seconds, your brain scrambles to catch up. It sounds funny, but it happens more often than you’d think.

Double the Expenses

Two homes mean two of almost everything. Two sets of bills. Two places to maintain. Two spots to keep clean and stocked. It adds up quickly, and it’s something you really have to plan for.

The Constant Packing

Every trip back and forth involves packing. What do I bring? What stays? I’ve spent more time than I care to admit standing over a suitcase, trying to remember what I already have at the other place.

Forgetting Things

No matter how carefully I pack, I always seem to leave something behind. My favorite sweater. A charger. That book I was halfway through. There’s nothing quite like reaching for something and realizing it’s a few miles — or a few hours — away.

A Split Routine

Life feels a little divided when you split your time. Your habits shift depending on where you are. Groceries, workouts, even your morning coffee spot change. It takes some getting used to before it starts to feel natural.

The Pros of Two Homes

Now for the good stuff — because there’s plenty of it.

The City Is Right There

Having a place in Manhattan means the whole city is at our fingertips. Restaurants, shows, museums, shopping — it’s all just steps away. We can pop in for a weekend and feel like we’re on a little getaway without having to travel far at all.

Flexibility We Never Had Before

I love the freedom this gives us. If we want a spontaneous night out in the city, we have a place to stay. If we want a quiet weekend at home, that’s an option too. We get to choose our mood and match it with the right setting.

New Experiences Around Every Corner

Every visit brings something fresh. A new coffee shop to try. A gallery opening. A walk through a neighborhood we’ve never explored. The city keeps us curious, and honestly, it keeps us young.

A Home Base in NYC

Best of all, we have a real home base in the heart of Manhattan. It’s not a hotel where we feel like guests. It’s ours. We can decorate it, fill it with our things, and truly relax. That sense of belonging makes all the difference.

My Final Thoughts

Owning two homes isn’t always easy. There are extra costs, forgotten sweaters, and those funny mornings when you can’t quite remember where you woke up. But for us, the joys far outweigh the challenges.

We’ve gained flexibility, adventure, and a special place to call our own in one of the world’s most exciting cities. If you’ve ever dreamed about a second home, I say explore the idea. Just go in with open eyes — and maybe keep an extra charger at both places.

Would I do it all over again? Absolutely.
