Spending the weekend in New York City is always a treat, and our recent getaway was no exception. With a mix of great food, Broadway shows, and treasured family time, it was the perfect way to experience the vibrancy and charm of Manhattan.
The Perfect Stay at the Tempo Hotel
We chose the Tempo Hotel on 47th Street as our home base for the weekend, and it didn’t disappoint. Situated right across from the TKTS booth on Broadway, the location was unbeatable for exploring the city and catching Broadway shows. The bonus? The price was just about $200 per night, which is incredibly reasonable for New York City.
Friday Night at Becco and Broadway
We kicked off Friday by heading straight to the TKTS booth to snag tickets for Dead Outlaw. Before the show, we met up with our son and had a wonderful dinner at Becco, an iconic Italian restaurant owned by Joe and Lidia Bastianich. The atmosphere was lively, and the food was truly memorable, setting the stage for an exciting night. Dead Outlaw proved to be a lot of fun, with fantastic music and a uniquely engaging production style.
Saturday’s Culinary Highlights and Family Time
Saturday morning began with breakfast at the Edison Hotel. I’ll be dreaming about their fried eggs for a long time; they were simply the best I’ve ever had! The afternoon was spent uptown for brunch with our dear friends Elena and Jim. After brunch, we took a walk through Central Park, although we opted to skip the zoo after seeing the admission price.
The best part of the day was getting to see my beautiful grandson, Ollie. It’s always such a joy to spend time with him. To cap off the day, my husband and I took our son-in-law Dan out to dinner at Mission Ceviche. The Peruvian cuisine was absolutely incredible, but the bill was a bit steep for what we ordered.
Sunday on Broadway and Steakhouse Fare
We started our Sunday early with a trip uptown to Barney Greengrass on the west side. Their bagels are famous for a reason, and the experience lived up to the hype. Later in the day, we met up with our son again to watch Operation Mincemeat at the Golden Theatre. The musical was clever, fun, and featured excellent performances from a small cast of five.
For our grand finale, we dined at Keens Steakhouse near Penn Station before heading home. Keens always delivers with its classic New York charm and incredible steaks. It was the perfect end to an amazing weekend.
A Love for Manhattan
Between the world-class food, lively cultural experiences, and the joy of reuniting with family and friends, this weekend in Manhattan was everything we hoped it would be. Each moment felt like a reminder of why New York City holds such a special place in our hearts.
We really should do this more often. Manhattan never fails to inspire and delight, offering the best of all worlds with its culture, energy, and culinary treasures. We’re already looking forward to our next staycation in the city that truly has it all.
