What Does Columbus Day Mean To You?

Most people don’t think about Columbus Day unless they have the day off. Others think Columbus Day is synonymous with big sales. And still others celebrate the accomplishments of Christopher Columbus as he sailed the ocean blue in 1492.

Lately, though, according to the Wall Street Journal, Columbus Day is “sailing away.” Parades in major cities have been dumped, but not in New York City. Brown University renamed the three day holiday to “Fall Weekend.” In South Dakota, Mike Graham, a native American, renamed the holiday to Italian American Day and it is now celebrated on a different date in the month. The second Monday in October in South Dakota is called, “Native American Day.”

In some places, like in Denver, Columbus Day parade has become very controversial. In the past, the crowd has thrown fake blood and dismembered dolls to marchers during the parade. This year, someone actually called the media and told the media that the parade was canceled, which was not the case.

I never really thought much about Columbus Day, except when I was in school and had the day off. Since I’ve been working, I’ve never had the day off for Columbus Day so I don’t think much about it. I know that it’s a holiday because of the sales and my son is off from school.

What do you think about Columbus Day? Are you for or against it being a Federal holiday?
