Staff Summit… July 23, 2009

Categories: My Agency

images1.jpegSounds important, huh? Well, it actually is and was important. We had the HJMT COMMUNICATIONS, LLC summit today, when Lisa Gordon and I got back from our meeting with Enterprise Rent-A-Car in New Jersey. What’s a summit? Before I joined the Entrpereneurs Organization (EO) I didn’t know. But after EO NY had their summit more than a month ago, I realized that this was something that HJMT needed to do. (We’ve actually been getting together for years now at the end of the year reviewing numbers, new business leads and firm growth, but we never really called it anything. The closest thing that we called it was a “managers retreat.” But, it really wasn’t that it was a summit.)

Anyway, we held a summit today and we talked about everything above and we also talked about Sandler Training that Kristie Galvani has been going to for the last few weeks on Thursday mornings in Hauppauge.

“Wow, that is really interesting,” said Ellen Heydt, HJMT Project Manager. “I really learned a lot and now I want to try it out.”

“Kristie will be meeting with each of you individually to role play and to help you develop your sales techniques,” I said. “I think it would be beneficial for both of you and for the growth of the firm.”

The summit ended about 6:30 pm and we all went back to work to check our emails. By around 7:30 pm, we were tired and those of us who were left decided to get some dinner at one of the best Italian Restaurants on Long Island, “Steve’s Piccolo Bussalo.”

Tomorrow, there will be a major suprise for all the HJMT staff. What do you think we’re going to do?

Music Review: Paul McCartney at Shea… July 22, 2009

Categories: My Life

Cover of Cover of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band

Did you see the Beatles at Shea Stadium in 1964? I didn’t. I saw Paul McCartney a few years ago at Madison Square Garden.

Last night I had the opportunity to see him again at the new CitiField (Shea Stadium) in Queens, NY. Paul McCartney, 67, rocked the house!

The show was the last of three shows at CitiField. One of the nights, Billy Joel came out and played with him. Even though there were rumors that Ringo Star may make a guest appearance last night, no one special came out besides McCartney.

This was an extremely emotional show and was different than the one I had seen at MSG. For starters, McCartney first talked about his friend, John Lennon, and even sang “Give Peace a Chance.” Then he spoke about his friend George Harrison and flashed photos on the screen of Paul and George together. He talked about how George was one of his first friends that he met on a bus to school. Thinking about the day that John and George died, made me cry because of their impact on our society with their music.

When McCartney closed with Sargent Pepper‘s Lonely Heart Club Band, which was followed by fireworks and graffiti, the crowd was screaming with excitement and pure joy!

As I was walking out of the stadium, I was thinking about all the people who were there in 1964 with the lousy sound system they had back then. I was thinking that the sound was pretty good. It was actually very good, especially sitting on the floor. I was glad I was there…

What Dessert Do You Eat At A Picnic? July 20, 2009

Categories: My Life

I went to a very dear friend’s house yesterday for a picnic. She served BBQ chicken, Flank Steak, salad and home-made macaroni salad. Everything was delicious.

When it was time for dessert, there were three to choose from:

  • Uncle Milton’s Cheesecake, Stanley Steven’s famous home-made cheesecake (light, creamy and totally yummy);
  • Berry Tart, bought in a bakery
  • Watermelon

Which one do you think I chose? What would you eat?

Visiting Day At Camp… July 19, 2009

Categories: My Life

13.jpgI think that every camp around the state of New York and Pennsylvania had their parent visiting day today. I’m not kidding. The traffic was ridiculous and everyone I spoke with this past week told me that they were visiting their children at camp this weekend.

Since this was the first time that my husband and I have sent our son to sleep-away camp, we didn’t really know what to expect. My son wrote to us and told us that he needed batteries, chocolate, money and his baseball bat. He also requested that we bring up a deli sandwich because the “food stinks!”

Before we left we made sure all his requests were filled. We didn’t know that we needed a blanket for a picnic, a cooler for water and sodas and other food, and we didn’t realize that there weren’t going to be planned activities. We thought that we would get there and the camp director would tell us… now it’s time for parent/child baseball, or now it’s time to go in the lake, etc. I was actually grateful that we had the opportunity to walk around and “hang out.”

The day was pleasant. My son was so happy to see us as we were of him. Three weeks seemed like a long time and it was just great to see his smiling face. (He also grew another inch and is now taller than my daughter and me!)

We toured the camp. My daughter had never seen the camp and was very impressed. It really is a gorgeous place — rolling hills, lots of trees and everything — state of the art. (Not like when I went to camp where we had outdoor latrines and showers.)

We got to the camp around 10ish and stayed until 4pm. When it was time to leave, it was so hard. We all wanted to just stay together… My son drove with us down the hill, and my husband pulled over the car to say goodbye.

“Let me give you the biggest hug ever,” I said to him as I stepped out of the car.

It was tough on all of us to leave but just knowing that he is happy and having a great time makes it all worth it…

Traffic Signs Are So Confusing Some Times… July 17, 2009

Categories: My Agency

6th Avenue bridge converted to two-wayImage by threecee via Flickr

I was driving to a golf course in Woodmere today and my car was stopped by a Long Island Rail Road train passing through the East Rockaway station. Sitting there, I noticed an interesting sign. It was a yellow diamond sign with a picture of a truck passing over the railroad tracks with a lightning bolt struck between the front and back end of the truck. My husband said, “look at that sign. What do you think it means?” The other people in the car didn’t say anything. We just stared trying to figure it out.

Then my family and I were driving over the Tappan Zee Bridge. As I was looking out the window I noticed a sign that said, “Life is too precious to waste.”

“I guess a lot of people jump over the bridge,” I said to my husband, Brian, who was driving the car.

“Yeah, this is one of those bridges where a lot of people commit suicide,” he said.

As we were driving further and further upstate, there were signs that said, “Falling Rock Zone,” but I didn’t see any rocks or any hills in site. I also noticed signs that had on it, a deer dancing. I guess it’s trying to tell us that there are deer crossing the road? Are there really deer crossing the New York State Thruway? Maybe… But the more signs I saw today, the more I was getting confused. Have you seen any confusing signs lately?
