Do Shopping Malls Lure Us In?

Yesterday I went to Tanger Outlet in Deer Park with my parents. Tanger recently opened outlets there and I’ve been three times. All three times, no one seems to be there. Walking around the beautiful shopping mall, I often feel as though I’m walking around a ghost town!

I went yesterday because I saw an ad in Newsday saying that a free coupon book was being offered and that there were lots of sales. And when I hear sale, I tend to run….

In any event, I was lured there by the coupon. I quickly picked up my coupon book and flipped through the pages. “What can I get?” I thought. I need a new golf glove and maybe even a shirt. So I looked through the book and found that I can get $10 off a golf simulator time. (That’s not helpful….)

Then I went to Calvin Klein to buy a couple of things, when I got up to the register, my total purchase wasn’t more than $150 and therefore, I was unable to use the coupon.

I noticed a coupon for Johnny Rockets and figured I would take my parents there for lunch. When we got there, there was a huge line out the door. (Where did these people come from? I thought.) We decided to go to Nathan’s instead of waiting so there went my 10% off coupon.

After lunch, I went to Neiman Marcus and didn’t find anything. I went to Wolfords and didn’t see anything and then I went to Old Navy.

“I think the prices are the same here as they are in Westbury,” I said to my mom. “These prices aren’t any better than a regular store.”

When I strolled into Off Fifth Avenue, Sak’s outlet store, I noticed that everything was 50% off of the already marked 50 percent off. I was excited! I found some really nice blazers for work, including an Armani blazer and an Ellen Tracy blazer. They were both so reduced that it was affordable to buy. So I did.

Before I got to the counter, I opened up my Tanger Outlets at the Arches Coupon book with over $600 in savings and found a coupon for Sak’s. It was 20% off one item. When I tried to use the coupon, the woman behind the cash register said, “No darling, you can’t use this.”

“Why not?” I asked.

“Because it can’t be combined with anything else,” she said.

So, Tanger Outlets at the Arches lured me in with the free coupon book that I couldn’t use. Hmmmm that doesn’t make sense, does it?
