An Automatic Car Park? November 23, 2011

Categories: My Life,My Thoughts

I thought I’ve seen everything until I drove into the city the other night. I decided to park my car on 24th street. I saw a sign that said “Parking” and I drove the car to the garage door, which automatically opened. I drove inside. A computer generated voice told me to get out of the car with my keys.

I made a face and said “Okay.”

I walked out and the garage door closed with my car inside. I started to get nervous. What the heck is going on here? Is this a scam?

The computer generated voice told me to put my credit card in a machine that looked like an ATM machine. I did it. I got a receipt and looked inside the garage door window. I saw my car getting lifted via conveyer belt to a spot in the garage. I was amazed. I never saw anything like it before!

When I came to collect my car I wondered how hard it would be to retrieve it. I put my ticket in the machine and was told to wait patiently. The machine said, “four minutes until your car will be here.”

I peeked into the window again and saw a lot of cars being shuffled. Then I saw my car being lifted up and placed in the same spot that I dropped it off. How cool was that?

Check out my video of the experience…

55th Wedding Anniversary November 22, 2011

Categories: My Life,My Thoughts

ParentsToday is my parents, Phyllis and Herb’s 55th wedding anniversary. It’s amazing how many years they are together. My dad met my mom when my mom was 14. He was the old man at 19.

They got married very young and had their three children immediately thereafter. My mom was only 19 when she had my older sister. Crazy huh? I can’t even think about what it would have been like to have a baby at that time in my life.

All three children got married and had their own children. Now, my parents have more than a half dozen grandchildren. What a admirable legacy!

Today people struggle to be married. It is hard work,  but my folks stayed together through good and bad times and that really is a beautiful thing.

So today, please join me in wishing my parents happiness and health on their 55th Wedding Anniversary!

A Special Moment for Me… November 21, 2011

Categories: Business,My Life

BaruchThe other night I was invited to give a keynote address to the alumni at Baruch College’s Executive MPA program.  I graduated from Baruch in 1991.  I was pregnant at the time and the following year, I gave birth, graduated with my Master’s Degree and started a business.

At the event, I looked around and noticed that many of my classmates were in the audience. That’s when I realized it was so special to be there.  I hadn’t seen these women in so many years. It was incredible to see them again, especially since I knew they lived far from the city.

There were six of us in our study group.  We were assigned the group from the very beginning.  (I don’t even remember how they were selected but I was put in a group with the most amazing women – Linda, Iris, Phyllis, Dale and Rosemary.)

We met two, three sometimes even four days a week and then met up again on the weekend for classes. They became my family.  We had such a tight tie.  We would talk about everything from work to family life.  It was an amazing feeling to have such a great support group.

My keynote address focused on what happened since I graduated. It was really an honor to give back to my Alma mater.

Maybelline Makeup Compared to Other Brands…. November 18, 2011

Categories: My Thoughts

MakeupI think the first time I used makeup, I went to the Lancome makeup counter at Macy’s or Bloomingdale’s and had a makeover. I  walked away spending $300 on makeup and skin care and I was set for a while.

At that time, everyone used Lancome.  After that, I tried Clinique, Elizabeth ArdenEstee Lauder and ChanelChanel became my favorite makeup of choice for many years after that.  But I was spending a fortune and decided to keep trying out these upscale brands and wondering if they really were any different than the brands you buy in a supermarket or drug store.

I went  with my daughter to the Lucky Shops event  in the beginning of November.  They had a ton of upscale brands there like Rebecca Minkoff, Rebecca Taylor, Milly’s and more.  They also had a Maybelline booth where makeup artists were doing mini makeovers.

I stood on line.  I asked one of the women if we could buy makeup and she said they were giving out coupons but they were not selling anything. As I got closer to the front of the line, I was asked if I wanted to sit with the makeup expert to find out my “perfect fit” or if I wanted to have a makeup artist give me a makeover.

I had no idea who this “expert” was so, I decided to let one of the artists on hand do my makeup.  After matching my skin tone with foundation, she put it on my whole face with a sponge.  It smelled a little funky but I guessed that all foundation has some sort of scent to them.

“Since your eyes are greenish brown, I want to use green eye shadow, okay?” she said.

I asked her while I was sitting there, “do you think that there is a difference between expensive and cheap makeup?”

She answered with an affirmative, “NO! Maybelline is the best brand out there and you don’t have to spend a fortune to look like a million dollars.”

So there you have it.  The makeup artist claims that Maybelline is the best but don’t you think she may be a little biased, as the company hired her for the show?
